2009 Becta
'Use of Learning Platforms to support Continuing
Professional Development in HEIs and Schools'. The
findings from this show the unrealized potential of an
initiative such as the 2006-2008 IDeA 'online tools for
local government professional networking' and how
this can be developed for the education sector. This
research informs Chapter 10.

SEN Portal Development: this development provided
the sort of evidence-based professional online resource
bank as envisaged in Chapter 10, Figure 10.4 item 4.2.
These sites were archived by the 2010 Conservative
Liberal Coalition government in the UK.
2006-2008 IDeA
development phase -
now ongoing (IDeA is
the UK Improvement and
Development Agency for
local government)
See Figure 10.2 Development and implementation of
online communities of practice for local government
(www.communities.idea.gov.uk) using Web 2.0
technologies and allowing local government officers to
create online workspaces for working with colleagues
across local authorities. See the education version in
Chapter 10, item 2.1 in Figure 10.4.
2006-2008 ITTE
IT in Teacher Education: the 'voices' project, which
was published as, 'What does our past in involvement
with computers in education tell us? a view from the
research community'. The findings from this project
underpin the history of technology as outlined in
Chapter 1.

Agency for Schools
Evaluation of the New Opportunities fund for the
ICT training of teachers and librarians. This research
revealed the difficulties of sharing expert knowledge
across a national system, the lack of CPD support
for schools and the isolation of teachers wishing to
adopt new ways of working with technologies, which
informs Chapter 5. Web 2.0 tools can support the
rapid knowledge building and sharing needed for a
society to develop educational practice quickly, which
informs Chapter 10.
2002 NOF (TCT)
Evaluation of the Technology Colleges Trust (TCT)
New Opportunities Fund (NOF) ICT Training for
Teachers. The findings from this project underpin the
work in Chapter 2 on policy and technology training
for teachers, and underpin the work in Chapter 5 on
teachers' professional development.
