Appendix 1 Glossary of terms,
acronyms and
abbreviations
Becta
British Educational Communications and Technology Agency :
a government agency assigned with responsibility for overseeing
the implementation of technology policy initiatives in schools and
further education (FE) colleges. Becta was an agency of the Labour
government, for three terms of office from 1998-2010.
Blog
web log : online reflective journal that other internet users can
also post comments on; allows collaborative publishing.
CD-ROM
Computer Disc-Read Only Memory: a computer disc that stores
information that is 'read only'.
Community
of practice
Groups of people who share a common concern and have knowledge
and skills to share. For example, a subject association network or a
network of teachers working on solving a particular problem.
Core subjects
Foundation subjects, which are taught at both KS3 and KS4
comprising English, ICT, mathematics and science in the National
Curriculum for England (from 2000 - 2014). Thereafter, ICT is to
become a 'basic' subject in the national curriculum.
CPD
Continuing Professional Development: The term given to
serving teachers' training needs.
Department
for Education
(DfE)
DES Department of Education and Science in England (became
DfE in 1992).
DfE Department for Education (previously DES ) became DfEE in
1995.
DfEE Department for Education and Employment (previously
DfE ) became DfES in 2001.
DfES Department for Education and Skills (previously DfEE )
(became DCSF in 2007).
DCSF Department for Children, Schools and Families (previously
DfES ) became DfE in 2010.
DfE Department for Education (previously DCSF ) from 2010.
Digital camera
a camera that stores photographs in digital format.
EDSL
European Computer Driving Licence : an internationally
accredited computer training qualification.
