practices when using technologies. This highlights the trend towards developing
learners 'digital wisdom', which encompasses responsible and informed use, an
awareness of risks and respect for relevant ethical and legal positions.
Conclusions
Does any parent want their child to leave school not competent and confident in the
range of technologies commonly used in today's society? For some communities, the
answer will be yes. Usually for religious reasons, some communities turn their back
on modern practices but, for most communities, equipping young people with the
skills and knowledge needed to work effectively in society is a high priority and is
expected to be a prime goal for education. This places responsibility for keeping up
to date with technology on the shoulders of school leadership teams and individual
teachers.
This chapter provides a number of audit tools for teachers to use in check-
ing their own and their pupils' knowledge of how to use technologies to support
learning. Such knowledge should now be part of every teacher's pedagogic content
knowledge and subject content knowledge. Keeping up to date is a responsibility
of all professionals, and parents have a right to expect the teachers to whom they
entrust their child to be using the most up-to-date pedagogical approaches involving
technology.
