and time again seen huge variations in practice between schools in the same country
even where the schools have similar amounts of funding.
The school's leaders play a major role in creating the ethos of the school, and the
ethos of a school determines the dominant pedagogical approaches, and the domi-
nant pedagogical approaches influence the allocation of resources.
So, unless senior leaders have a vision for pedagogy within their institution
which is underpinned by technology or are prepared to support innovative teachers
in the use of technologies to support learning, practice within the school will not
incorporate technology.
Individual teachers who wish to work in schools which are innovative in the use
of technologies to support learning are advised to ascertain the position of the school
leaders with respect to technologies before taking up a post.
Where school leaders want to drive change, they will need to consider the fac-
tors inhibiting the adoption of technologies such as those outlined in this chapter,
together with theories concerning the management of change and the adoption of
innovations. The following chapters will provide more details.
