This section reviews router CPU and memory components, such as NVRAM, flash, and RAM
memory. For the test, you need to be familiar with the location of configuration files and IOS
images.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Most Cisco routers have the Motorola 68000 series or Orion RISC (R4700) microprocessors.
The CPU is the brain of the system. It runs route algorithms, exec processes, route filtering,
network management, and so on. Some processes, such as Open Shortest Path First(OSPF),
task the CPU with large computations.
The CPU type can be checked with the show version command. Example 3-1 shows a Cisco
MC3810 using the Motorola MPC860 processor.
