senescence occurs in June. At the end of June there is a clip and after that the animal
grazing (cows, horses and donkeys) until the end of November. The estimated stok-
ing rate is around 0.5-1 animals per hectare each year and we can therefore assume
that the grazing is extensively managed. The climate of this area is mountainous
Mediterranean (Petriccione et al.
1993
), typical climate of the Italian Apennines region.
Average annual precipitation is 1,365 mm (ARSSA local database) with two precipita-
tion peaks: one in autumn (October to December) and the other one in spring (March
to April). The precipitation minimum occurs in July. The soil is Haplic Phaeozems
