The cubing apparatus is composed of a rotary auger and a heavy press wheel, which
forcesbiomassintoandthroughdieopeningsinaring.The4-to8-cmcubeshave
asquaresectionof2to4 ×2to4 cm,andtheirbulkdensityis350-400 kg m −3 .
The extrusionprocess basedonslidingfrictionconsumesabout25-30 kWh t −1
energy. Another alternative which compressed the biomass into small cylinders
(see Fig. 5.20b )havingadiameterof10-20 cm,randomlength(5-20 cm),and
high density(300-350 kg m −3 ) was also studied. The energy consumption was
about8-10kWht −1 .
