Determine the probable total consolidation settlement of the layer (a) by the
coefficient of volume compressibility and (b) by the compression index. Explain why
the two methods give slightly different answers.

(a) Settlement by coefficient of volume compressibility

(b) Settlement by compression index

98 mm
The compression index method is not so accurate as it represents the average of
conditions throughout the entire pressure range whereas the coefficient of volume
compressibility applies to the actual pressure range considered.
