Simplifying and Securing Your Design
Sharing your design with potential customers is great as long as you don't put
your intellectual property at risk. You can use the Shrinkwrap tool to create
simplified models any time you like. It allows you to build substitution level-of-
detail representations.
In this exercise, you'll build a simplified part to which to add BIM information:
1. Make certain that the 2013 Essentials project file is active, and then
open c14-01.iam from the Assemblies\Chapter14 folder.
2. Click the BIM Exchange tool in the Begin panel of the Environments tab.
This will launch the BIM Exchange tab on the Ribbon.
3. Click the Shrinkwrap Substitute tool from the Component panel.
4. You can define filenames and paths in the New Derived Substitute
Part dialog box, but for this exercise, click OK to accept the defaults
shown in Figure 14.16.
FIGURE 14.16 Set the filename and path
information in the New Derived Substitute dialog box.
5. In the Assembly Shrinkwrap Options that appear next, click the
Range (Perimeter) radio button, and set Min to 5 mm and Max to
1000 mm.
6. For the Simplification mode, select Remove Geometry By Visibility,
and leave the slider at 0 percent.
7. Set the style to Single Solid Body Merging Out Seams Between
Planar Faces, and then click the Preview button. Figure 14.17 shows
the results.
8. Click OK to generate the file using the options.
9. When the simplified model becomes the active level of detail for the
assembly, notice that the vent in the top of the housing and the open-
ings on the hose fittings are capped to remove geometry.
