CHAPTER 13
Creating Images
and Animation from
Your Design Data
2D drawings have long been the standard in engineering communication, but
increasingly they're seen as an incomplete means of communication. Building
3D geometry and using it only as a resource for 2D drawings is selling your work
short. There is much more you can do with it.
Let's start with manufacturing and maintenance documentation. The
exploded view is a great communication tool. In Chapter 6, “Creating Advanced
Drawings and Detailing,” you used an Autodesk ® Inventor ® 2013 software pre-
sentation file to create an exploded view drawing. In this chapter, you will see
how that presentation file was created.
Another valuable asset that you can create from the 3D work is a rendering
or rendered animation. Marketing can then use these files to promote the
products while the product is in engineering. You can also use this informa-
tion to lobby inside the company for the opportunity to develop a concept.

Building options to refine scenes
Making a movie of the assembly
Developing an Exploded View
The presentation file exists to enable the user to pull the assembly apart with-
out really affecting the assembly. A presentation file is based on an assembly
but does not change it. It will, however, reflect any changes made to the assem-
bly just as a drawing view would. You'll use this behavior to create an exploded
view of an assembly and then add simple animation.
