CHAPTER 12
Working in a
Weldment Environment
A weldment is a specialized assembly. Like the sheet metal tools, the tools
that the Autodesk ® Inventor ® software provides for working with weldments
are built around the workflows and demands of a production environment. A
weldment is an assembly that is regarded as a single, inseparable part.
Building the weldment as an assembly first makes it easy to understand how
the components need to be positioned and what components are included in
the weldment. The weldment environment also understands the ramifications
weldments have on BOM structure and how to handle the weldment as a single
component and document its members when needed.
Welds that are added to the weldment exist only in the environment and do
not require you to maintain more files.

Converting an Assembly
There are a few special environments or shells within an assembly, and in
order to access the weldment tools for Inventor, you must convert your
assembly to a weldment.
