8. After the dialog box opens, click the long edge of the short face
(Figure 10.24).
9. Use the Type drop-down to set the option to Teardrop.
10. Set the Radius value to 0.8 mm, as shown in Figure 10.24, and click
OK to place the hem.

The Hem tool's four options should cover almost any requirement for fabrica-
tion. Now, you can focus on making your components suitable for the manufac-
turing process.
Preparing the Part for Manufacture
In some cases, you might choose to send data for the finished part to an exter-
nal resource and allow that person to calculate the material needed to create the
part. Inventor has the capability to develop a flat pattern for a part. You can also
edit flat patterns to add material that isn't included in the folded part.
Building the Flat Pattern
A flat pattern for a part includes calculations for the stretch of the material as it
is formed. The type, thickness, and bend radius can affect this calculation. It is
also common for companies to build in extra material to cause deformation, and
this is done by modifying the flat pattern.
