In-Depth Information
These parameters can be as simple as a fillet radius, or they can be based on the
clearance hole standard for a particular type of fastener. Either way, when you work
with a parametric model, you open up a new world of control over your designs.
Now, you have a sketch that represents the geometry from which you'd like to
make your first feature. When you start a part, the first feature you create will
be a sketched feature, most commonly an extrusion or a revolved feature.
NOTE The following modeling exercises describe the procedures using
the mini-toolbar and in-window tools. All the tools and options are also avail-
able in the Ribbon or in dialog boxes.
Extruding the Base Feature
The first feature in a part is referred to as the base feature. It is usually beneficial
to define as much geometry as possible with the base feature.
Certification
Objective
1. Make certain that the 2013 Essentials project file is active, and then
open c03-05.ipt from the Parts\Chapter3 folder.
2. In the Design window, click one of the sketch lines. As you do so,
commonly used tools will appear.
3. Click the Create Extrude tool on the left.
4. An initial preview of the extrusion will appear with a mini-toolbar
appearing in the middle of the screen and a full dialog box. Both
show the current value for the extrusion distance.
If you want to reduce
the size of the dialog
box, you can click
the arrow icon at
the bottom of the
dialog box. Moving
near the dialog box
will expand it tem-
porarily, or you can
click the down arrow
while the dialog box
is expanded to lock
it at full size again.
5. Click and drag the arrow at the end of the extrusion until the value in
the mini-toolbar reads 15; or, highlight the value in the mini-toolbar,
and enter 15 . See Figure 3.15.
6. Moving near the mini-toolbar also displays additional options. Click
the green check mark, which represents OK, to create the feature.
The extrusion is generated on the screen, and a feature named Extrusion1
appears in the browser.
