Using WordPress software gives you the option of using a far wider range of free themes—nearly
1,000 at this writing, as shown in Figure 3.4. You have access to many additional themes that are
paid for. Choosing from this far greater range of options enables you to start off with a theme much
closer to what you want. From there, you're completely free to modify themes, and you become
involved in a community that will support you every step of the way.
See Chapter 11 for information on making the move to WordPress.org.

Listing the Themes
The number of themes on offer is overwhelming for most people. If you're serious about themes,
though, you need to be able to compare the existing themes to get an idea of what's offered and
help you focus on the themes that have the key features you need.
If you're considering buying the CSS upgrade for WordPress.com to tweak a theme, or working in
WordPress software, you want to know which theme has the right structure to serve as a starting
point for your own work.
To assist, we've summarized the currently existing themes in WordPress.com for you in Tables 3.1
through 3.4. The tables summarize the themes as follows:
Table 3.1 —Themes with one, three, or four columns, including themes that offer a choice as to
number of columns.
