In-Depth Information
V
XX XXL is a “real” magazine—and XXL uses WordPress to host a lively, “real” website. As you visit
the site, you'll see fully capable site navigation, a News feed, a Twitter link, and more.
Visit www.xxlmag.com to see the home page of XXL, which receives a constant stream of updates.
WordPress also makes it easy for the site to put bloggers front and center. This is vital for a maga-
zine website that can use the blogs to host constant live information, without a lot of hassle—and
with a mix, perhaps, of paid and unpaid contributors.
Click the Bloggers link to visit the Bloggers page. You can see a mix of brands, famous and not-so-
famous faces and names, and more. Again, XXL doesn't have to invest a lot of money to develop
full blogging capability; it's all part of WordPress.
Not to say this kind of effort is cheap—but the money can go into what people see rather than the
software back end. And because WordPress is open source, XXL can make changes when they
need to.
You probably shouldn't expect to get a look like XXL's, not to mention the same level of interactivity
or advertising support, on your own; the XXL site is clearly a big project.
Surfin' Safari
We kind of hoped this was a blog about surfing—and it is, in a way. The topic, though, is web surf-
ing, not waxing down our surfboards and not being able to wait for June.
WebKit, a toolkit for web browser development, is one of the most important open source projects
around—not quite as important as WordPress, perhaps. It's used as the core of Apple's Safari
browser and many other famous browsers, including several smartphone browsers.
Figure C.1 shows the home page for Surfin' Safari. It's much
more a typical blog than the XXL site—far less customization
and eye candy. Surfin' Safari is just the facts, but still pre-
sented in a clean, attractive style.
Surfin' Safari gives developers, or just interested members of
the public, an easy and familiar way to get information and
interact with the WebKit team—a great example of what a
blog is all about.
