Inserting an Office Document into Your Post
You can include an office document in your post instead of an image. To do this, simply upload a
file with one of the office document types:
.pdf
for a PDF file,
.doc
or
.docx
for Microsoft Word,
.ppt
or
.pptx
for Microsoft PowerPoint,
.odt
for Open Office, and similar documents.
WordPress uploads the document to the Media Library and inserts a text link—not a graphical pre-
view—into your post. When the user clicks the link, the file is downloaded to the user's hard disk
from where it's stored in the Media Library. (For the link text, word it in such a way that the user
understands what's going to happen; perhaps something like “click
here
to download the list of
participants in a Word document.”)
Be careful, though, for your site visitors' sake. The way some recent browser versions download
files makes it a bit tough for users to find the files. It's also easy for the user to download a docu-
ment, open it, change it, save it, and then not be able to find the document.
Consider various use cases—who might be downloading the document, why, and their level of
computer knowledge—then provide appropriate support for helping them succeed.
