Using Add New

mode is easier.
Working in HTML
The Full-Screen mode for adding and editing posts, which we recommend in this chapter as your
primary tool, does not include access to the underlying HTML code of your page. You can only use
the HTML tab in the more restricted view available in the Shared-Screen mode. This is particularly
restrictive for working in HTML, which requires lots of screen space for you to see enough code
and text to figure out what's going on. For HTML editing, you might want to work in a separate
HTML editor and then cut and paste the result into WordPress—a clumsy process, but possibly
the best choice.
The WordPress.com site that you use for blogs hosted by WordPress has many advantages, but
support for working directly in HTML is not one of them. In fact, WordPress.com is intended to
make life easier for those who don't want to work in HTML. Chapters 7 and 8, “Adding Features to
Your Blog,” and “Tracking Statistics and Bringing In Visitors,” respectively, describe how to use
HTML in WordPress.com when needed, but if you are skilled in HTML and want to use your knowl-
edge, you might be better off using the WordPress software directly.
See Chapter 1, “Getting Started with WordPress,” for more on the difference between WordPress.com
and WordPress software. See Chapter 11, “Installing and Upgrading WordPress Software,” and subse-
quent chapters for information on downloading and using the WordPress software.
