On an island infested with cars, cycling is still in its infancy. But as the traffic gridlock pro-
liferates, it can only be a matter of time before both locals and visitors rediscover the time-
saving and health-extolling benefits of two-wheeled transportation.

Cabo Rojo

) The secondary roads on the southwest coast of the island pass
gently rolling hills around Guánica, Cabo Rojo and Sabana Grande. There are enough roads
here for a two- or three-day trip, including roughshod trails around the Cabo Rojo light-

Before You Go
If you want to do serious cycling in Puerto Rico, you'll find that it's more cost-effective to
fly with your bike. The options for long-term rentals on the island are scarce and expensive.
Also, remember to bring plenty of extra tubes, a spare tire, basic tools and a couple of re-
placement spokes so the island's combination of rough roads and scarce bike shops doesn't
leave you out of commission.
