SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR DIVING & SNORKELING
Before embarking on a scuba-diving, skin-diving or snorkeling trip, carefully con-
sider the following points to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:
» Possess a current diving certification card from a recognized scuba-diving instruc-
tional agency (if scuba diving).
» Be sure you are healthy and feel comfortable diving.
» Obtain reliable information about physical and environmental conditions at the dive
site from a reputable local dive operation.
» Be aware of local laws, regulations and etiquette about marine life and the environ-
ment.
» Dive only at sites within your realm of experience; if available, engage the services
of a competent, professionally trained dive instructor or dive master.
» Be aware that underwater conditions vary significantly from one region, or even one
site, to another. Seasonal changes can significantly alter any site and dive conditions.
These differences influence the way divers dress for a dive and what diving techniques
they use.
» Ask about the environmental characteristics that can affect your diving and how
trained local divers deal with these considerations.
Where to Snorkel
» Culebra & Vieques ( Click here and Click here ) The best snorkeling in Puerto Rico
can be found off the sheltered islands Culebra and Vieques, where you can snorkel directly
from the beach. The former offers Punta Melones and the wonderfully isolated Playa Car-
los Rosario, the latter boasts Green Beach and the handily located municipal beach in the
main southern settlement of Esperanza.
» Isla Caja de Muertos ( Click here ) The south coast faces clear Caribbean waters that
suffer low river runoff. Taking the day trip out to this island near Ponce can satisfy hikers
as well.
» La Parguera ( Click here ) These warm waters have some decent snorkeling, and DIY
adventurers can access hidden mangrove beaches via kayak.
