In-Depth Information
» Carjacking, though rare, is not unheard of in Puerto Rico, so stopping for anyone who
waves you down or approaches your vehicle carries significant risk.
» Many island drivers notoriously ignore stoplights and stop signs late at night.
Parking
Finding parking can be a real problem in San Juan. Do not park at curbs painted red or yel-
low. Parking fees at the hotels average about $20 per day.
GETTING AROUND ON CULEBRA & VIEQUES
Although rental cars from the main island are prohibited on the eastern islands of
Culebra and Vieques, you can rent vehicles on both the islands and dozens of 'taxi'
vans or públicos will shuttle people around the island for somewhere between $3 and
$5 each. Públicos will meet travelers at the docks. Prices for common destinations
are usually fixed, and bartering is in bad taste. You can also rent scooters and bi-
cycles on Vieques. Options for transportation are more limited on Culebra.
Hitchhiking
Hitchhiking is rare in Puerto Rico and not recommended. If you are going to try it, be ex-
tremely cautious. Pairs of a man and a woman will likely have the most success getting a
ride. For women traveling alone, hitchhiking is too dangerous.
