Cars It is not legal to bring a rental car to the island. Rental cars can be parked at a secure
lot by the dock.
Food There is no meal service; you can buy drinks and snacks at the ferry terminal. Most
locals bring their own food. Drinking alcoholic beverages is officially prohibited, but often
occurs.

Car
Despite the occasional hazards of operating a car in Puerto Rico, driving is currently the
most convenient way to get around the countryside, see small towns, cross sprawling sub-
urbs and explore wide, open spaces. This is particularly relevant to roads such as the Ruta
Panorámica where public transport is scant and cycling deemed too dangerous. Renting a
car is nearly essential for most visitors.
Rental
In orderto rent a car you must meet the following requirements:
» You must be over 21.
» You must have a major credit card.
» You must have a valid driver's license.
» You should have proof of insurance.
All of the major international car-rental companies operate on the island, along with dozens
of smaller, local firms. Car-rental agencies are listed in the local Yellow Pages and in the
Puerto Rico Tourism Company's (PRTC) publication, Qué Pasa . You will find plenty of
rental companies at LMM airport, in major cities and in resort towns ringing the island's
coast. Agencies in San Juan include the following:
