Money
Major bank offices in San Juan and Ponce will exchange currency from around the
world. Foreign travelers are advised to handle all exchange transactions in these cit-
ies, as exchange can be difficult elsewhere on the island. There are also exchange
desks at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and major resorts.
Post
Sending mail from Puerto Rico is best done through Airmail. Aerogrammes, pre-
printed sheets that fold into envelopes, are for sale at most post offices. Sending by
surface, while inexpensive, can take up to two months to cross the Atlantic and up to
three to cross the Pacific.
Telephone
Although the online services from Skype ( www.skype.com ) are the cheapest and
best option for travelers making international calls, prepaid phone cards are also
widely available. To call home from Puerto Rico:
» First dial 011, the international dialing prefix.
» Dial the country code of the country you want to call. For Australia, dial 61; the UK,
44; Ireland, 353; New Zealand, 64.
» Dial city or area code and the local number.
