In-Depth Information
Environmental Hazards
» Animals Do not attempt to pet or feed any animal, except domestic animals known to be
free of infectious diseases. Spiny sea urchins and coelenterates (coral and jellyfish) are a
hazard in some areas.
» Mosquito Bites Except for infrequent outbreaks of Dengue fever, mosquito-borne ill-
nesses are usually not a concern in Puerto Rico. A bug spray containing DEET is best to
ward off insects, but use sparingly as it kills natural organisms in island bays and inlets.
» Sun Stay out of midday sun, wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Apply sunscreen
with SPF 15 or higher, with both UVA and UVB protection, approximately 30 minutes be-
fore exposure. Reapply after swimming or vigorous activity.
» Water Tap water in Puerto Rico is safe to drink. Those with sensitive stomachs will find
purified water abundant, though please consider the environment while buying bottled wa-
ter.
Pests
» Cockroaches These durable pests thrive in the tropical environment, and are not uncom-
mon. Though harmless, they can ruin a meal…especially when they fly.
» Hookworm Can be contacted by simply walking barefoot through infected sand or dirt.
Public health initiatives have reduced the prevalence of the disease, but the possibility of
catching it still exists. Frequent bathing and the use of footwear is the best prevention.
» Sandflies Called 'no-see-ums' by islanders. These invisible bugs come out mostly in the
early evening. Culebra and Vieques can be particularly thick with them.
Insurance
Regardless of whether you have health or home owners insurance at home, you should
buy travel insurance to cover medical expenses, luggage theft or loss and cancellations or
delays in your travel arrangements. You should be covered for extreme cases, such as an
accident that requires hospital treatment and a flight home. Coverage depends on your in-
surance and type of ticket, so ask both your insurer and your ticket-issuing agency to ex-
plain the finer points. Worldwide travel insurance is available at www.lonelyplanet.com/
travel_services . You can buy, extend and claim online anytime - even if you're already on
the road.
STA Travel ( 800-777-0112; www.statravel.com ) Offers travel insurance options at
reasonable prices.
