In-Depth Information
» Weights & Measures Puerto Rico follows the American imperial system with two
exceptions: all distances on road signs are in kilometers and gas is pumped in liters.
Camping
Camping is a difficult proposition in Puerto Rico, since reservations have to be made at
least 15 days in advance, reservation offices and ranger stations have maddeningly erratic
hours and the quality of facility varies greatly.
Beachcamping For beach camping and inexpensive cabañas at beachfront facilities of the
centros vacacionales contact Compañía de Parques Nacionales (CPN; National Park
Company; 787-622-5200, ext 355 or 369; www.parquesnacionalespr.com in Span-
ish;ApartadoPostalNo3207,SanJuan,00904) , which allows camping at several pub-
lic beaches, including Vieques and Culebra.
National Forests & Reservas Forestales (Forest Reserves) Contact the Departamento
de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales (DRNA; Department of Natural Resources &
Environment; 787-999-2200; www.drna.gobierno.pr inSpanish;Rte8838Km6.3,
Sector El Cinco, Río Piedras) at least 15 days in advance for reservations and a permit.
Commonwealth-run forest-reserve campgrounds are likely to have showers and RV hook-
ups available; national forest campgrounds tend to be less developed.
Privatecamping These are on private property and are usually close to or in a town. Most
are designed with RVs in mind; few accept tents.
Rainforest camping At time of research there was an indefinite moratorium on camping
within El Yunque National Forest.
CAMPING TIPS
» Bring anything you might need from home; outdoor outfitters are extremely rare on
the island.
» Use caution camping alone at a site without a guard. Most CPN sites have guards.
» Camping reservations through state agencies require a valid credit card.
