Arriving in Puerto Rico
» Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (LMM)
The LMM airport ( Click here ) in San Juan provides the same conveniences as any major
airport in the US - car rental desks, fast-food restaurants, direct phones for hotel bookings
and a well-ordered taxi stand. Taxis set non-negotiable flat rates to all major areas of San
Juan.
» Old San Juan Piers
If you arrive by cruise ship ( Click here ), the best dining and shopping of Old San Juan is
within a short walk.
Can I Drink the Water?
First-time travelers to Puerto Rico are often a bit trepidatious about the tap water, but
there's no cause for concern. Unlike many destinations in the Caribbean, the quality
of water here is held to the same standards as any other place in the US, making it
100% safe for drinking. Visitors will see plenty of bottled water for sale, but it's
worth considering the environmental impact of all that plastic before purchasing wa-
ter.
Food safety issues common in other parts of Latin America are also no issue here:
milk is pasteurized and dairy products are safe for consumption. Local meat, poultry,
seafood, fruit and vegetables are also safe to eat. Although hygiene standards at some
roadside lechoneras (eateries specializing in suckling pig) might be questionable,
you'll rarely go wrong by trusting your instincts and following the crowd.
