In-Depth Information
an old farmstead in the Valle de Lajas (Lajas Valley). This area around the plains and shores

Centro Interpretativos Las Salinas de Cabo Rojo NATURE
CENTER
(Hwy 301 Km 11; 8:30am-4:30pm Wed-Sat, 9:30am-5:30pm Sun) A small center
further south along Hwy 301 toward the lighthouse explains the geology and ecology of
the salt pans. It is staffed by knowledgeable ecosensitive guides who give thorough explan-
ations of local flora and fauna. Across the road is a three-story wooden lookout tower that
offers a bird's-eye view of the salt pans, a major bird migratory corridor. There is also a
small network of hiking and mountain- biking trails here (though no place to rent a bike),
which lead to a stretch of very long beach on the island's west side. This is not perfect sand
- much of it is dotted with mangrove forest - but it is excellent for private swimming.
Cycling
There are numerous cycling trails around the Cabo Rojo lighthouse and wildlife refuge.
The condition of the trails is a bit sketchy - expect to catch a branch or two in the face -
but they access some solitary stretches of beach that are blissfully refreshing. Ask at the
Centro Interpretativos Las Salinas de Cabo Rojo for details. The nearest bike rental is at
the Wheel Shop ( 787-255-0095; www.wheelshoppr.com , in Spanish; Hwy 100 Km
5.9) in Cabo Rojo (El Pueblo). Expect to pay from $20 per day.
