Zoológico de Puerto Rico ZOO

Wed-Sun) After a multimillion-dollar top-to-bottom renovation, the only real zoo on the
island has joined the modern standard of facilities with natural-looking environments,
wheelchair-accessible paths and a conservationist bent. Of the 600-odd species of reptiles,
birds, amphibians and mammals the highlight is the brightly polished arthropod and butter-
fly house, where kids squeal at glass enclosures of giant tropical cockroaches and brightly
painted butterflies that flutter about. The aviary, where visitors walk on an elevated board-
walk through a large net-enclosed area, has a number of bright tropical species as well. Off
Hwy 108, the zoo is just to the northeast of the university in the same neighborhood as the
agricultural research station and city park.

a host of disciplines at this university. Over the years, RUM has become the premier math
and science campus of the University of Puerto Rico system and boasts internationally re-
spected programs in agriculture and engineering, as well as in the physical and biological
sciences. The campus lies just out of town off Calle Post (Hwy 2). Though visiting campus
can offer a glimpse into Puerto Rican higher education, it may be easier to commune with
