Surfing
Surfing is the prime attraction, so if you're arriving in high season, make arrangements for
rentals or lessons as early as possible. If you're just looking for a casual arrangement, there
are shacks with boards to rent by the major surfing areas.
There are several reliable surf schools that get very high marks from former students.
Rincon Surf School SURFING, YOGA
( 787-823-0610; www.rinconsurfschool.com ) Rincon Surf School often does lessons
at Sandy Beach and is a good bet for beginning adults. Also on offer here are surf-and-yoga
combo packages, and lessons specifically for women.
Surf 787 SURFING
( 787-448-0032; www.surf787.com ) The coolest kid on the block, Surf 787 also has a
suite of packages, all-inclusive surf vacations, adult getaways and a kids' surf camp. The
instructors here, who are all CPR and water safety certified, also offer lessons for couples
and small groups.
West Coast Surf Shop SURFING
( 787-823-3935; www.westcoastsurf.com ; 2e Muñoz Rivera; 10am-2pm) Right
off the Plaza de Recreo, this sleekly designed, modern surf shop sells and rents top pro-
fessional gear. The owners have great local knowledge and can organize lessons for any
standard or age at short notice. They will deliver rental gear to your hotel room so it's ready
when you arrive.
Desecheo Surf Shop SURFING, SNORKELING
( 787-823-0390; www.desecheosurfshop.com ) One of the many well-positioned op-
tions on the road to the lighthouse, this place can rent a surfboard to fit conditions for about
$35 a day; boogie boards cost about $15. It also sells clothes and rents snorkeling equip-
ment.
