In-Depth Information
upscale restaurant overlooking the harbor. Find it easily by heading south on Rte 701, past
the line of seafood restaurants. The snack bar near the pool is where the cruising fraternity,
mostly American, comes for cheap breakfasts in the morning and cheap beers through the
afternoon. Although rare, it might be possible to hitch a ride to a neighboring island if you
hang around here long enough.
Manatee Eco Resort & Loco
Pelicano Restaurant HOTEL, RESTAURANT $$
( 787-824-6688; Calle A Sector Playita No 286; r $84-125; ) It's not clear
what efforts this self-defined 'eco' hotel makes for the environment, but after a recent
facelift it is a more economical option across the harbor from the Marina de Salinas. The
rooms are a bit dark, but have tiled floors, mini-refrigerators and microwaves. The res-
taurant turns out excellent mussels and dramatic sunset views. You can also rent kayaks
to navigate the bay for $40 a day, and, according to the amiable hosts, there are scores of
manatees in the area.
Balcon de Capitan SEAFOOD $$
(Calle54,Hwy701;mains$10-30; lunch&dinner) Although the slow economy has
hidden many Playa Salinas restaurants behind shutters, the Capitan soldiers on, earning its
Mesón Gastronómico status through fresh plates of red snapper, a good seafood-stuffed
mofongo and tangy mojo isleño (a thin tomato-based sauce). The dining room, often fri-
gid with air-conditioning, is a pleasant enough place for dinner, though in high season the
open-air patio gets lively with a boozy mix of locals and yachters.
Getting There & Away
You cannot miss where the públicos gather in the lot near the town plaza. You can get to
Guayama for about $3 or Ponce for $6. To get to Playa Salinas and the marina, you have to
walk about 1.5 miles or negotiate with your público driver.
From the east, Hwy 3 becomes Hwy 1 as it passes through Salinas. From Ponce, drivers
should take Hwy 1 east or the Hwy 52 toll road to Hwy 1 south.
