Getting Around
Bicycle
Vieques is excellent for cycling, and partaking in a little two-wheeled transport will help
ease the proliferation of cars that goes hand in hand with tourist growth. The road across the
island from Isabel Segunda to Esperanza is less than 6 miles in length and can be tackled
by any moderately fit cyclist. See Click here for bike rental.
Car & Scooter
You may not need wheels for your whole stay, as most of the main facilities are located
within close proximity to each other in the center of the island. Most rentals are Suzuki
Samurai jeeps (about $50 to $70 a day), and reliable operators include IslandCarRentals
(
787-741-1666) , Maritza's Car Rental (
787-741-0078;
www.maritzascarrental.com ) and Coquí Car Rental (
787-741-3696) . Reserve
ahead in high season.
Fun Brothers ( 787-435-9372) rents two-passenger Yamaha scooters (with helmets)
for $50 a day from a kiosk at the east end of Esperanza Strip.
Public Transport
If you have not arranged for a rental car at the airport or an airport pickup/drop-off with
your guesthouse proprietor, you'll need one of the island taxis; $10 to $15 will get you just
about anywhere on the island. Públicos usually greet both ferries and airplanes, and will
take you where you need to go, but you can't be in a hurry to get there. You'll pay between
$3 to $5 per person to travel between Isabel Segunda and Esperanza, with públicos running
fairly regularly.
