Wed-Sun) A new place with a modern take on Puerto Rican cuisine, Conuco is named for
Taíno garden plots. Chef Rebecca Betancourt injects culinary magic into a revamped tra-
ditional home complete with entranceway veranda and a corrugated metal roof that echoes
in the rain. Standouts include the bacalaítos (cod fritters), mahimahi with passion fruit and
coconut sauce and the pionono (sweet yellow plantains stuffed with ground-beef stew). Ro-
mantic and refined, this is the north side's best spot for a dinner date.

ings generated by top-notch chef Michael Glatz. Under a softly lit patio with palm trees and

tuna and spicy sauce), or make yourself choose from the long list of daily specials. Don't
miss sampling the basil-and-goat cheese or toasted-coconut-rum ice creams. Reservations
a must in high season.
Cantina La Reina MEXICAN $

May-Nov) Ensconce yourself inside this dramatic blood-red building for California-style
Mexican fare accompanied by a laundry list of tequilas. Guacamole, fajitas and chilaquiles
(tortilla chips with eggs) feature, though the sugar-dusted churros and ice cream has its
rabid fans. The walls are covered in religious objects and revolutionary iconography, and
there's a romantic upstairs roof deck and a pool table to boot.
Barefoot Be'stro SEAFOOD $$

open air dining room is topped by a thatched roof, the patrons dine at mosaic beach tables
and benches, and the chef prepares meals in a seascape-festooned food cart. You could call
it gourmet casual or upscale island, but either way it works. The seafood is prepared with a
tropical flair, with favorites including variations on Caribbean lobster.
