In-Depth Information
robust opinions across the spectrum and is guaranteed to be like nowhere else you have
ever visited. Designed by cutting-edge Canadian architect John Hix, this unique guesthouse
consists of four industrial concrete blocks that arise out of the surrounding trees like huge
granite boulders (or the island's abandoned navy bunkers). Hosting 13 rooms, the ethos
here is minimalist, ecological and close to nature - the idea is that the rooms open up to
give you the feeling that you are actually living in the forest. Further green credentials are
earned through solar panels, recycled water and natural air-conditioning (trade winds), and
daily yoga classes are available. It's a brave and surprisingly attractive experiment.
W Retreat & Spa RESORT $$$
( 787-741-4100; www.wvieques.com ; Hwy 200 Km 3.2; r from $499;
) Breathlessly trendy and uberchic, Vieques' only resort has been the darling of the design
set since it unfurled its showy feathers in 2010. Coffee-table books on green living and urb-
an trespass are scattered about the lobby lounge, a glammed-out art explosion with bursts
of color and texture from striped rugs and furry pillows. All 156 rooms (oceanside are the
quietest) have private balconies or patios and discreetly hidden TVs, and stock Bliss bath
products in open bathrooms with both showers and washing-board-styled tubs. Other hotel
features include a full spa, a signature restaurant(dinnermains$22-39; breakfast&
dinner) by chef Alain Ducasse, a beachside fire pit with wraparound sofa, three pools and
two beaches (though the surf can be quite rough). A not unsubstantial nightly resort fee
($60) includes whisking to and from the W's private airport lounge, plus yoga classes, ac-
cess to the fitness center and tennis courts and use of snorkel gear. Some guests have noted
that, like a hot club that hasn't quite hit its stride, staffing and amenities can be strained on
busy weekends.
Inn on the Blue Horizon INN $$$
( 787-741-3318; www.innonthebluehorizon.com ; d $160-370; ) Small is
beautiful. The Inn on the Blue Horizon was surely invented with such a motto in mind.
With only 10 rooms harbored in separate bungalows wedged onto a stunning oceanside
bluff a few clicks west of Esperanza, the sense of elegance here - both natural and con-
trived - is truly breathtaking. The luxury continues inside the restaurant and cozy com-
munal lounge, which overlook an Italianate infinity pool fit for a Roman emperor. Children
aged under 14 years not permitted in high season.
