Founded in
1984 to save the island's bioluminescent bays, the trust operates the tiny Museo de Esper-
anza, which contains exhibits on the ecological efforts of the trust, the island's natural his-
tory and its early Indian inhabitants. Behind the gift shop, the museum runs what is sup-
posedly the smallest aquarium on earth, a series of tanks in which baby sea creatures are
displayed for a few weeks before being returned to the ocean. There are also exhibits on

Cayo de Tierra
SCENIC OUTLOOK
A teardrop of land between the
malecón
and Sun Bay reached by a slender sandspit (or
by wading, if storms have washed it out), Cayo de Tierra has a few irregularly maintained
trails that make for an interesting ramble. At the northern tip is a large hyper-saline lagoon
teeming with birds, including ospreys and pelicans. The island's high point peaks at 80ft,
