menu, which boasts mostly steak and chicken dishes and sandwiches such as a shrimp

Susie's CARIBBEAN $$
( 787-742-0574; dishes $17-23; 6-10pm Tue-Sun; ) Beautifully presented
Puerto Rican food with Asian accents, this Culebra favorite curates a rotating collection of
crowd-pleasing dishes, always including fresh fish such as grouper and snapper. Diners can
choose from tables at the long purple banquettes indoors - where Susie herself might pop
out to momentarily escape the kitchen's heat - or the pleasant outdoor dockside seating. Be
forewarned: Susie's island mash - a side of yucca, malanga and potatoes - may become
your next comfort food. Reservations recommended.
El Eden CARIBBEAN $$
( 787-742-0509; dinner mains $17-25; 9am-9pm Wed-Sat; ) Come hungry.
A liquor store with an excellent and eclectic wine selection, its restaurant is the special-
occasion dinner choice for Culebra residents. Set with patio tables frocked in mismatched
tablecloths, it's not an elegant place, but feels that way nonetheless, with owners Richard
and Luz greeting everyone like long-lost friends. Dishes including lobster risotto and melt-
in-your-mouth gnocchi with pesto sauce come in huge portions, and desserts such as cara-
mel pecan fudge cake or rum-laced bread pudding will initiate extended after-dinner strolls.
Reserve ahead.

tro. You're also in Barbara's house - her front verandah to be more exact, so tread carefully.
When you've decided what you want, take the menu into the front room and holler through
the kitchen hatch at the busy Barbara as she scurries around the kitchen. Hey presto, 15
minutes later out comes fish-and-chips, a juicy burger or a plate of homemade crab cakes.
It's rather quaint, once you get your head round the system. Bring your own booze.
Mamacita's CARIBBEAN $$
(mains$15-21; lunch&dinnerdaily,breakfastFri-Sun; ) Always buzzing with
activity, Mamacita's offers some of the best-presented food outside of San Juan, along with
zero pretension and laid-back, quirky service. Fish and meat plates are tasty, seasoned and
creative, and the menu - which always includes at least one vegetarian option - changes
