CAYO SANTIAGO
In 1938 a team of scientists from the University of Puerto Rico and Columbia
University in New York decided to turn Cayo Santiago into a research area. Five
hundred rhesus monkeys were let loose on the peaked, hazy island just offshore from

Only researchers and scientific personnel from the Caribbean Primate Research
Center ( http://cprc.rcm.upr.edu ) are permitted on the island, but visitors can eyeball
monkeys from their boat (don't forget that monkeys can swim). There's fabulous
snorkeling around a sunken ship not far from the shore.
