El Conquistador Resort & Golden Door Spa RESORT $$$
( 787-863-1000; www.elconresort.com ; 1000AveElConquistador;rfrom$280;
) A 900-unit mega resort that encompasses a steep coastal escarpment a few
clicks northeast of Fajardo, this minitown boasts its own cove, cable car, mock Andalusian
village, and - just in case you were harboring any James Bond allusions - private fantasy
island. If your idea of a good vacation revolves around golf, tennis, spa pampering, water
sports, fine dining and gambling - with lots of company - this could be your bag. Mind the
resort and parking fees.

La EstaciĆ³n CARIBBEAN $$
( 787-863-4481; Hwy 987 Km 4; dishes $9-20; dinner Fri-Wed; ) Done up
like an artist's funky loft, this playfully converted gas station has a jeep dashboard bar on
the patio and a candlelit dining room hung with classic bicycles. Just around the corner
from the El Conquistador, this indoor/outdoor eatery serves heaving portions of mofongo
(mashed plantains), skirt steak and even a few good veggie items, on heavy wooden ped-
estals, with delicious sauces and an eye-fluttering passion fruit vinaigrette salad dressing.
The outdoor barbecue gets fired up when the weather's good, and there's a pool table in the
separate bar area (open until 2am Friday and Saturday, otherwise until midnight) that's fun
for evening entertainment.
