In-Depth Information
Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn HOTEL $$
( 787-889-1713; www.luquillosunrise.com ; A2 Costa Azul; d incl breakfast
$125-155; ) Filling a gap in the midrange market, the Luquillo Sunrise Beach
Inn is caressed by cooling Atlantic sea breezes in each of its spiffy 17 ocean-facing rooms.
There's a communal patio and all upper-floor rooms have large balconies overlooking the
beach. Other facilities include a conference room, satellite TV and an excellent compila-
tion of local information, restaurant menus and maps. Luquillo plaza is two blocks away
and the famous balneario and food kiosks are a 30-minute stroll along the beach.
Hotel Yunquemar HOTEL $$
( 787-889-5555; www.yunquemar.com ;No6Calle1,FortunaPlaya,Luquillo;rin-
clbreakfast$95-115; ) The name Yunquemar sums it up. Lying in the shadow
of El Yunque and within pebble-pitching distance of the mar (sea), you've got the best of
both worlds here. A comfortable family-run hotel with its own swimming pool and beach,
and a pool table and wide-screen TV tucked down in the enormous basement, it's a quiet
respite a few minutes' drive from central Luquillo.
Río Mar Beach Resort & Spa RESORT $$$
( 787-888-6000; www.wyndhamriomar.com ; 6000 Río Mar Blvd; r/ste from $200/
340; ) The Río Mar inhabits an entire hill just west of Luquillo. Spread
over a mammoth 500 acres on former plantation land, there are two golf courses here along
with a 600-unit high-rise hotel facility with the obligatory casino. It's better landscaped
than some of the island's mega resorts, with dotted palms and imaginative art that pays a
nod to indigenous island culture. On-site restaurants offer a choice of sushi, Italian, Puerto
Rican or grill fare.
Rainforest & Ocean View Inn INN $$
( 787-889-1807; www.rainforestoceanviewinn.com ; Hwy 992 Km 4; d $165, each
additional person $15; ) As well as offering horseback rides and mountain bik-
ing, Hacienda Carabalí runs a new 12-room inn. Set on a hill with a lovely pool and the
stellar views promised by the name, the large dark-wood rooms have fridge, microwave
and coffeemaker, plus a separate loft area that works well for families (guests can include
two kids under 12 years of age without extra charge). The only drawback is the satellite
location - you need to call the main office if you need anything, and the good restaurant
(dishes $9 to $28) down near the stables only opens for lunch and dinner.
