In-Depth Information
Bus
The Autoridad Metropolitana de Autobuses (AMA; Metropolitan Bus Authority &
Metrobus; 787-294-0500,ext514or524) has a main bus terminal in Old San Juan near
the cruise ship piers. Buses cost 75¢ and run until 10pm. Since the bus companies aren't big
on disseminating information, it's almost impossible to track down a current map, and the
routes change somewhat frequently, it's a good idea to confirm bus lines with your lodging
or a local. These are the routes taken most often by travelers (bus numbers are followed by
associated route descriptions):
T5 Old San Juan, Stop 18, Isla Verde (via Loiza)
T9 Old San Juan, Sagrado Corazon (train station), Río Piedras
C10 Sagrado Corazon (train station), Ocean Park (via Loiza), Condado, Stop 18, Isla
Grande airport/Convention Center
B21 Old San Juan, Isla Grande airport/Convention Center, Condado, Sagrado Corazon
(train station)
B40 Isla Verde, LMM airport, Río Piedras
C53 Old San Juan, Condado, Ocean Park (via McLeary), Isla Verde
In Old San Juan there is a handy free trolley bus that plies routes around the old quarter,
with three routes. The trolley starts and finishes a block away from the main bus terminal,
toward the piers, but you can get on and off at any one of two dozen designated stops.
Car
If you can avoid driving in the city, by all means, do so. Traffic, parking and the maze of
thoroughfares make having, let alone driving, a rental car in the city a challenge.
In Old San Juan, there are two handy parking facilities on Recinto Sur just as you enter
town: Covadonga, above the bus station, and Dona Fela, about three blocks further west.
Both charge about $1 for the first hour, and 50¢ to 65¢ for additional hours. The town's
cheapest lot, La Puntilla( 787-723-7422) , charges about $5 per day.
For access to El Morro or the nightlife of San Sebastián, check out the underground lot (be-
neath Plaza del Quinto Centenario off Calle Norzagaray) at the upper end of town.
For car rental, both Avis ( 800-331-1212; www.avis.com ) and Hertz (
800-654-3131; www.hertz.com ) have offices at LMM airport.
Ferry
The commuter ferries of Autoridad de Transporte Marítimo ( 787-788-1155; per
trip$0.50) connect the east and west sides of Bahía de San Juan, Old San Juan and Cataño.
In Old San Juan, the ferry dock is at Pier 2, near the tourism office. The ferry runs every 30
minutes from 6am to 9pm.
