In-Depth Information
Café La Plage BAR
( 4851 Av Isla Verde, Isla Verde; noon-midnight Sun-Wed, noon-late Thu-Sat)
Cozy up in a bed on the beach, comb the sand with your toes and make bedroom eyes from
behind a flavored mojito. Secreted behind the Beach House Hotel, this palm-shaded lounge
has a stylish yet relaxed vibe, with live jazz Thursday nights and lounge sounds Friday and
Saturday.
Water & Beach Club BAR
(2CalleTartak) The soon-to-be-renamed lounges situated in Isla Verde's Water & Beach
Club are popularly considered to be two of San Juan's most esteemed watering holes,
where San Juan's well-heeled and the well-endowed come to swap email addresses. One
dominates the swank roof space - due to reopen soon after an extensive remodel - and the
other is located off the chic white-on-white ground-floor lobby. They're interconnected by
a space-age elevator decorated rather surreally with its own water feature.
SANTURCE
Tia Maria's GAY BAR
( 326 Av José de Diego; 11am-3am) She admits to being almost 30, though the boys
who pack Tia Maria's are aged across the spectrum and turn up from all over the island for
the cheap drinks, good company and perhaps a game of pool. Tuesday-night karaoke.
San Juan Eagle GAY BAR
( www.eaglepuertorico.com ; 1204 Av Ponce de León; ) Bust out (or out of) those
chaps! The men of Puerto Rico have anxiously awaited this brand-new addition to the pop-
ular Eagle leather bar franchise.
LA PLACITA DE SANTURCE
Revitalized after an injection of municipal funds, the once dilapidated Santurce
marketplace rocks just like old times. The show starts not long after dawn when
bleary-eyed market traders stock up their permanent stalls with homegrown treats
from around the island. There's chayote from Barranquitas, pumpkin from Coamo,
pineapple from Lajas, and mango from Mayagüez - all glowing colorful, tasty and
fresh in the morning sun.
