Make Copies of Your Tickets
Before you leave on your trip, make photocopies of all your tick-
ets and take the copies with you. Just be sure to keep them in a
different place than your original tickets. I keep my tickets and
an itinerary in my briefcase and copies of them in my suitcase. As
a matter of fact, you should have photocopies of all important
travel documents, especially passports.
If You Need a Refund
Should your plans change or circumstances force you to cancel
your trip, there's a right way to go about getting a refund. You
should go back to the travel agency if you bought the tickets
that way, or you should contact Amtrak if you booked direct.
Either way, you will need the original tickets for a prompt refund.
Amtrak has a liberal refund policy, even handling many refunds
by mail. There are some restrictions, so be sure to ask which
might apply when you make the reservation.
What About Travel Insurance?
I've gone back and forth over this question for years and still
haven't come up with a good answer. Travel agents all recom-
mend that you buy this insurance, but they're hardly objective
since they get a commission for selling it.
Travel insurance will compensate you if you have to cancel
your trip, either before you start out or while you're traveling.
Almost any reason will constitute a valid claim, but some poli-
cies are not as liberal as others in that respect. Just think care-
fully before buying. Essentially, you have to ask yourself what the
