As you book sleeping-car space, reserve rental cars and hotel
rooms, and decide on specific activities, your itinerary could go
through many changes. One of my finished itineraries is repro-
duced at the end of this chapter (page 64) as an example.
A Word of Warning About Connections
If you're flying, a missed connection probably won't turn out to
be a very big deal. Chances are there'll be another plane from
either the same airline or another before too long. It's different
with Amtrak. There are no other passenger railroads, and most
of Amtrak's long-distance trains only run once a day. The Cardi-
nal, for example, operates just three days a week.
