Railroad Museums
There are many really excellent museums devoted to trains and
railroading around the country, from Sacramento's California
State Railroad Museum (an outstanding experience) to a wonder-
ful display of locomotives and railroad equipment at the Smith-
sonian in Washington, D.C. Once again, the Internet provides a

Private Railcar Excursions
If you've always dreamed about traveling around the country in
the luxury of a private railcar, there are ways to make that hap-
pen. A number of firms offer these exclusive rail tours, either in
their own private cars or in equipment they lease from the cars'
owners. Some tours cover relatively short distances while some are
overnight, but all provide the unique experience of some glorious
if temporary time travel back to the golden age of train travel. For

Silver Rails Country
Finally, and very much worth mentioning, there is the ambi-
tious railroad-themed Silver Rails Country, a destination unto
itself located in La Plata, Missouri. It's a work in progress at the
moment, but it's right on the Southwest Chief's route and can
be easily reached by passengers leaving the California Zephyr
at Ottumwa, Iowa, or the Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg
trains at Quincy, Illinois. There's a railroad-themed hotel called
