APPENDIX E
PASSENGER RAIL ADVOCATES
All over the country, ordinary people have recognized the critical
importance of rail transportation. These individuals have mobi-
lized to take action by joining nonprofit organizations that advo-
cate more and better passenger trains.
The one organization with a national overview is the National
Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP). NARP has a full-
time paid staff and is located in Washington, D.C., which makes
a lot of sense because that's where the federal government is and
where the power and the money are.
There are also many other organizations around the coun-
try that focus on local and regional transportation issues. These
organizations, representing many thousands of voters, are taking
the passenger rail message directly and forcefully to elected offi-
cials at all levels of government. Nothing is more effective.
You can help by joining NARP and adding your voice to the
chorus. (See the next page for a membership application form.)
Since Amtrak gives NARP members a 10-percent discount on most
rail fares, the savings on just a few trips can more than pay for the
cost of your membership. (Note: This discount does not apply to
sleeping-car fares.) You could also consider membership in one of
the regional organizations. For an up-to-date listing, go to www.on
-track-on-line.com and click on “ARP List.”
