Then it's back to Richmond to catch the Silver Meteor, which
leaves there after dinner and will deliver you to Savannah, Geor-
gia, bright and early the next morning. Two days here will give
you a good taste of the Deep South. Back aboard the Meteor,
you'll ride two hours to Jacksonville, where you'll rent a car and
drive 30 miles to St. Augustine, Florida, one of the older cities in
North America. Ponce de León first visited the area in 1513; the
city itself dates back to 1565 when it was founded by Don Pedro
Menendez. There are several days' worth of historical sights to
visit, not to mention the famous Marineland aquarium. From
here you can take the Meteor back north to Charleston, South
Carolina. The Civil War began here, and the city is full of his-
torical sites and antebellum homes, many of which are open for
tours. After a few days here, take the Silver Meteor overnight to
Washington. I promise you will love this one.

ride on VIA Rail's Canadian through the Rockies to Jasper. After
a day or so seeing this magnificent area—there's wonderful fly-
fishing in the summer months, by the way—leave just after lunch
and head back to the Northwest on VIA's train to Prince George,
a small city situated in the middle of an almost-endless forest of
spruce trees. Prince George's 75,000 people enjoy frequent fes-
tivals and community events that are of interest to visitors, too.
There are no sleeping cars on this train, so passengers spend the
night in one of the hotels here. Back aboard the train the next
morning, it's an all-day ride to Prince Rupert on British Colum-
bia's North Coast where, according to the locals, “eagles, bears,
