In-Depth Information
When you stop and think about it, that's really quite a remark-
able odyssey, especially when you consider the variety of people,
cultures, and activities you'll encounter along the way.
Semigrand Tour: Seattle-Chicago-New Orleans-Los Angeles-
San Francisco-Seattle
For this abbreviated version of the 'round-the-country trip, just
lop off the eastern portion of the previous itinerary. Start in Seattle
and head east on the Empire Builder to Chicago. From there, take
the City of New Orleans due south to the train's namesake. After
several days of great food and music, take the Sunset Limited (see
the note about schedule changes on page 289) to Los Angeles.
Connect with the Coast Starlight for the run up the coast to San
Francisco, Portland, and back to Seattle. It's not “the ultimate,”
but it's still a great trip.
Fall Colors I: Philadelphia-Pittsburgh-Chicago-
Washington, D.C.-Philadelphia
Time your trip so you hit the peak of the fall colors, and it will
be sensational. Take the Pennsylvanian from Philadelphia to
Pittsburgh, because the entire ride is done mostly during day-
light hours. Just about dinnertime, you'll go through the famous
Horseshoe Curve at Altoona. Stay in Pittsburgh for a day or so
if you wish, or have a nice dinner while waiting for the Capi-
tol Limited, which comes through later in the evening for the
overnight ride to Chicago. From there, take the Cardinal south
through the New River Gorge and over the Blue Ridge moun-
tains back to Washington, D.C. It's a glorious trip at any time of
the year but really something special in the fall. After a few days
in Washington, zip back to Philadelphia on an Acela.
