Zephyr through the Rockies and across the desert to Truckee, a
wonderful little town in the Sierra Nevadas. After a day or so,
catch the Zephyr once again and continue on into the Bay Area.
(An Amtrak bus will take you from Emeryville to San Francisco.)
A Western Triangle: Los Angeles-San Francisco-Portland-
Chicago-Santa Fe-Los Angeles
Start in Los Angeles and take the Coast Starlight to San Fran-
cisco for a few days of fine dining and sightseeing. Then catch the
Starlight again and continue up the coast to Portland. Take a few
days in the City of Roses and be sure to make use of the wonder-
ful trolley system running throughout the downtown area. Catch
the Portland section of the Empire Builder; it will take you on a
two-night trip through Spokane, the Rockies, and Montana and
all the way to Chicago. Take at least two days there, because
there's a lot to see and do in the downtown area. There's the
marvelous Shedd Aquarium on Lake Shore Drive, and don't miss
the Museum of Science and Industry, which is also nearby. You
can tour a captured German World War II submarine, the U-505,
among many other exhibits. Next, catch the Southwest Chief
and head through Illinois farmland, across the Mississippi River,
through Dodge City, to Lamy, New Mexico, which is where you
get off for a visit to Santa Fe and maybe the art colony in nearby
Taos. Catch the Chief again a couple of days later for the over-
night ride back to Los Angeles.
