APPENDIX B
SUGGESTED ITINERARIES
Here are some examples of long-distance train trips that will
provide plenty of great scenery and opportunities for sightsee-
ing. You won't need many suggestions from me before you begin
plotting you own trip. It will help if you refer to Amtrak and VIA
Rail system maps on pages 42 and 223. You can begin most of
these trips from any of the principal cities included in the itiner-
ary. For instance, in the Big City Tour listed below, you can start
your trip from New York just as easily as you can from Chicago.
For more detailed information about specific trains mentioned
here, refer to appendix A.
I really think that one key to a great train trip is to travel with
a reason. My train trips always seem more successful and fun if
there's a specific purpose for them. Think about putting together
a rail itinerary based on a special interest: the Old West, the Civil
War, baseball, rail museums, and so forth. Maybe you are look-
ing at prospective colleges for your 16-year-old son or daughter,
or maybe you want to visit old friends. As you can see, the pos-
sibilities are almost endless.
Finally, you should also get hold of the latest edition of
Amtrak Vacations , which includes a good variety of preplanned
rail tours. You can get a free copy by calling Amtrak Vacations
