Louis, you'll cross the Mississippi River about 20 minutes after
leaving Alton, Illinois. There's a great view of the city skyline on
the left. Several minutes later, the Gateway Arch will be on the
right.
Little Rock, Arkansas, comes and goes in the middle of the
night. You'll wake up right around the time you cross into Texas
at Texarkana. The Arkansas-Texas state line runs right through
the town. In fact, it runs right through the railroad station.
Depending on whether you're sitting toward the front or rear of
the train, you'll either be in Texas or still in Arkansas.
By the time the train reaches Longview, you're in the middle of
oil country. Then, as you follow the Sabine River, you'll see cattle
and horses. Dallas comes right at lunchtime, with Fort Worth an
hour and a half later. The route from there to San Antonio is a
nice one. You'll probably be having dinner when the train stops
in Austin, the state capital. Underway again, the Eagle will cross
the Colorado River and complete the run to San Antonio around
10:30 P.M. This is where the westbound train connects with the
Sunset Limited for the trip on through to Los Angeles. You'll get
a restful night's sleep here, because you'll be sitting in the station
all night before the early morning departure.
If your trip began in Los Angeles, your car will be detached
from the Sunset Limited here in San Antonio and become part of
the northbound Texas Eagle. Once again you'll be arriving late
at night and departing early the next morning, affording every-
one a night onboard with no rocking and rolling. (Please note
that while the Texas Eagle operates daily, the Sunset Limited runs
only three days a week. That means this overnight connection
only works on those three days.)
Important note: As this edition was being produced, Amtrak
was working on a proposal to increase the Texas Eagle's service
from three days a week to daily between San Antonio and Los
