I really like this train too. Given a choice, I prefer the southbound
trip because it offers a bit more daylight—although, come to think
of it, maybe it's because that's the direction Willie Nelson was
headed. (If you don't get that reference, go and buy his recording
of “The City of New Orleans,” which is very possibly the best
railroad song ever recorded.) Anyway, it's dark or very close to it
when the train leaves Chicago, so you won't see much of all that
Illinois farmland as you head south to Cairo. That's where you'll
