tion than the Meteor, too. Its midmorning departure from New
York means that you'll still have some daylight left for the very
pretty countryside south of Washington. At Rocky Mount, North
Carolina, the Silver Star heads inland for a stop in the wee hours
at Columbia, South Carolina's capital. After passing through
Orlando and Kissimmee, the Silver Star turns west and crosses
the state, passing through orange groves and some of Florida's
horse country en route to Tampa on the Gulf Coast. From there
it's back east and down the coast to Miami.

855 miles
Duration:
17½ hours

The Auto Train's northern terminus, Lorton, Virginia, is a suburb
of Washington, D.C. At the other end, Sanford, Florida, is just a
few miles from Orlando and Disney World. This is really a classic
case of finding a need and filling it. Maybe you want to have your
personal automobile with you in Florida and don't want to make
the long drive south. Or maybe you'll be spending enough time
in Florida to make renting a car an expensive proposition. Either
way, the Auto Train is the perfect answer. Note that there are no
intermediate stops—you board in Lofton and end up in Sanford
or vice versa, because special facilities are required to load and
unload the cars (which is a fascinating operation to watch, by
the way).
